Sail by yacht and set wishes afloat at sunset: Busan’s BOMA Festival opens on 7 November

A festival is coming to the shores of Yeongdo, Busan, where visitors can take a yacht ride, set wishes afloat at sunset on Achi Beach, and meditate through voice and movement with healers from around the world. The third Busan Global Ocean Healing & Meditation Art Festival, BOMA Festival, will take place over two days, on 7 and 8 November, at the gymnasium and the main auditorium of the Industry-Academic Hub Building at National Korea Maritime and Ocean University, as well as Achi Beach.

Now in its third year, BOMA Festival is an ocean healing and meditation festival that began the year before last. This year’s theme is “AI 시대, 다시 인간을 느끼다 (Feel Human Again)”. The festival promises two days of resting, learning and healing by the sea.

From yacht trips to setting wishes afloat at sunset: everything is free on the first day

The first day, Saturday 7 November, is a sea festival open to the whole family, with all programmes free. To prevent no-shows, a refundable deposit of 10,000 won must be paid when booking and will be returned at the venue on the day (no deposit is required for infants or primary and secondary school pupils). BOMA stalls and pop-up classes will run from 1pm to 5pm. Activities include yacht trips (at 2pm and 3pm, lasting 50 minutes, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis), tarot and astrology readings, wellness stalls, a barre class and acroyoga.

The main festival runs from 5pm to 8.30pm. It opens at Achi Beach with Haewon (海願), setting wishes afloat beneath the sunset, before moving to the gymnasium for a series of artist performances.

Performers include BOMA’s general director, counselling psychology PhD Byeokra Lee Young-sook; Japanese sound artist AKIRA, appearing on the festival stage for the third consecutive year; Czech energy therapist BORA; and healing counsellor EVA. They will be joined by handpan player Ha Taek-hu and the group Samatdi; Jinso, who leads voice meditation; movement meditation practitioner Ryu Da-gam and dance troupe Adan; Venerable Hyemyeong, who will convey the resonance of existence through a large drum performance; energy dynamite artist Gu Hee-a; and the orchestral club SSBB.

Three years in partnership with the Marine Healing Research Centre: from a sea of work to a sea of rest

BOMA stands for Busan International Ocean Meditation & Art Festival. It has been held with the Marine Healing Research Centre at National Korea Maritime and Ocean University, with the aim of creating a healing platform where local communities and the world can connect through the sea and meditation. This year’s organisers are the BOMA Festival Organising Committee, the Korea Ocean Meditation and Wellness Association, Blue Mind Korea, Magenta4U, the Korea Tarot Association and the Marine Healing Research Centre at National Korea Maritime and Ocean University.

Last year’s second festival took place on 25 and 26 October on the same campus. The first day featured marine healing experience stalls, yacht and motorboat experiences, and a healing concert. On the second day, the programme continued with ocean hatha yoga, ocean insight meditation, a tea ceremony and mindfulness meditation, ocean flow movement meditation, and sound harmony meditation.

Ryoo Dong-keun, president of National Korea Maritime and Ocean University, said: “The sea in Busan, Korea’s maritime capital, is a sea where we work, but it is also a sea that lets us rest. I hope this will be a time to catch our breath by the sea and look at one another again.”
