Located near Woljeongsa in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, Odaesan Nature Meditation Village, situated at an elevation of 700m, is gaining attention as a new healing destination for modern people. Known as 'OMV', the name is derived from the first letters of Odaesan (Odaesan), Meditation (Meditation), and Village (Village). It is a meditation-focused resort facility that opened in July 2018 after five years of preparation by Woljeongsa.
This meditation village, built on a site of approximately 99,170㎡, which is 14 times the size of a soccer field, offers complete relaxation to modern individuals weary from the digital world, centered around three themes: 'Rest in the Forest', 'Eat from Nature', and 'Play Slowly'.
Escape from Digital and Return to Nature
The most significant feature of OMV is its thorough digital detox. The guest rooms, made of wood in a two-story building, do not have TVs or refrigerators, and there is no internet connection. Instead, each room is equipped with a meditation space made of cypress wood, allowing guests to spend time solely facing themselves.
The accommodations are divided into spring, summer, autumn, and winter sections, embodying the names of the seasons, with a total of over 130 rooms, including 20 ondol rooms, 38 twin rooms, and 18 single rooms, accommodating up to 150 guests. Visitors are referred to as 'Empathizers', and the space is designed to ensure that all time spent here becomes a natural meditation.
All-in-One Healing with Meditation and Natural Meals
Staying at OMV offers more than just a place to sleep. All guests receive two meditation programs per day, along with complimentary breakfast and dinner. Morning meditation and evening yoga programs are conducted at Donglim Seonwon, and comfortable casual wear is available for free rental.
Accommodation rates vary depending on room type and day of the week, and detailed pricing information can be found on the official website (www.omv.co.kr) or by phone inquiry (033-333-6500). The package includes meditation programs, two meals of natural cuisine, and a digital detox environment, allowing guests to focus solely on complete healing without any additional costs.
Healing Facilities Embraced by Odaesan
At the center of the meditation village stands Donglim Seonwon, a traditional hanok built with larch, covering an area of 160 pyeong. Daily meditation and yoga programs are held at Donglim Seonwon, and crossing the Donglim Bridge over the Odaechun River allows one to experience the serene atmosphere of the mountain temple.
The restaurant 'Supida', which serves natural meals, offers healthy dishes made from seasonal ingredients. The 'Jo Jung-rae Literary Museum', where the renowned Korean author Jo Jung-rae resides as an honorary village chief, shares the wisdom of humanities and is a unique space of its own. Regular programs such as meditation meetings on the second Saturday of each month and intensive healing yoga sessions on the third Saturday are also conducted.
Healing Through Walking on Forest Trails
Throughout the village, meditation walking paths are spread out, including the maze-like 'Garden of Enlightenment' made of zelkova trees, the 'Path of Wind's Color' meandering through the tranquility of the pine forest, the discreetly created 'Secret Garden', and the 'Buddha's Garden'. The scenery of Odaesan enveloped in morning mist evokes deep contemplation.
Thanks to its location at the entrance of Odaesan National Park, healing trips can also be connected to nearby attractions such as Woljeongsa and Sangwon Temple, which houses the statue of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Vehicles must be parked in an external parking lot, and visitors must walk into the village. This process also allows one to slow down the pace of daily life and surrender to the rhythm of nature.
Time to Recharge Before Returning to Daily Life
Odaesan Nature Meditation Village is not just a simple accommodation facility; it is a healing platform that modern individuals gift to themselves. Just as those who awakened over fifteen hundred years ago opened Odaesan, this place offers a way of living awake to those of us living in the present.
Time spent meditating in a room filled with the scent of cypress wood, away from digital devices, and walking along the slopes of Odaesan while breathing in nature. What OMV provides is not a dazzling spectacle, but a tranquility that allows one to focus solely on oneself. If your body and mind are weary from work and competition and need true rest, this small village embraced by Odaesan could be the answer.
