Gwangmyeong Cave is moving away from conventional tourism focused on family-friendly walking tours and has transformed into an immersive healing space where visitors experience the cave’s stillness and darkness through all five senses. Gwangmyeong City Corporation (CEO Seo Il-dong) said it will, from 1 August, officially roll out two new hands-on experience content offerings that make use of previously undisclosed areas in the deep interior of the cave.
The initiative is part of the “Gwangmyeong Simdo (Depth): Extract the value of the local area from deep within the cave” project, which was selected for and is being carried out under the Gyeonggi Tourism Organisation’s (GTO) call for proposals for the “2026 Gyeonggi Local Tourism Content Discovery and Support Programme”.
1. Details of two main new programmes
① Darkness Immersive Meditation (Immersion Meditation)
Key features: This distinctive meditation programme lets participants lie back comfortably on a beanbag inside a previously undisclosed passage where outside noise and mobile phone notifications are completely blocked. For around 30 minutes, they listen to the soft light that flows along the cave walls, electronic music, and the cave’s own resonance.
How it is run: Without any forced breathing techniques or meditation rules, participants can enjoy the immersion in a free-form way—either closing their eyes and focusing on sound, or simply resting comfortably. To maximise a highly private environment, the number of places per session is strictly limited to 10 people.
Operating schedule: 1 August (Sat) to 30 August (Sun) (closed every Monday / five sessions per day)
Target participants and booking: Adults aged 19 and over (advance booking via the experience and leisure platform ‘FRIP’)
② Darkness Stage (Darkness Stage)
Key features: A listening programme in which participants set aside visual information entirely and focus solely on the cave’s echoes and music in complete darkness.
Distinctive element: A talk time is also held alongside the sessions, during which hosts from a range of fields—including musicians, creators and designers—join in directly for each session. They share a playlist shaped by their own tastes and then communicate freely with participants after the listening.
Operating schedule: 21 to 23 August, and 28 to 30 August (six days in total / five sessions per day, with 50 people limited per session)
2. Side-by-side summary of programme highlights
Seo Il-dong, CEO of Gwangmyeong City Corporation, said that “These new contents are not going to be a one-off event. They are the first step in developing the cave’s unique history and depth into a sustainable local tourism resource. Please take a moment away from everyday fatigue and experience a time of complete healing and emptiness deep within the cave.”
