Among relics bearing the touch of people from thousands of years ago, the clear, deep resonance of singing bowls fills the air. It’s surprising how a space called a museum can embrace us in such a different way. In April, the National Cheongju Museum will present a distinctive wellness program designed to help citizens heal their mind and body.

A museum becomes a meditation space — What is the “Resting-Voices” program?

The National Cheongju Museum (Director: Hwang Eun-soon) will operate a hands-on experience program, “Resting-Voices Singing Bowl Meditation & Yoga,” throughout the month of April. The name “Resting-Voices” already contains the essence of this program. It refers to the idea of giving you time to slow down your everyday pace and return to yourself — a museum that helps you rest.

The venue isn’t a simple lecture room. It is the Ancient Relics Room 2 (the “Archaeology Room 2”), where actual artifacts are on display. In that space, where the breath of history is layered and accumulated, participants let the sound of the singing bowls guide their bodies. The quietness of things from long ago will deepen the experience of meditation.

How will singing bowl meditation and yoga be carried out?

The program consists of two main pillars. First, guided by a professional instructor, participants enter a meditation session immersed in the resonance of the singing bowls. Singing bowls are instruments made of metal or crystal; when struck or rubbed, they produce rich overtones. This can help stabilize brain waves and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. As the vibrations of sound seep into the body, tension eases, and even meditation beginners can naturally reach a deeply relaxed state — a major appeal of this practice.

After meditation, you’ll wake up a body that feels stiff through gentle yoga movements. Yoga, which connects breathing and motion into one flow, helps release tension and supports energy circulation. It’s one hour where two practices blend together: opening the door of the mind through singing bowl meditation, and opening the door of the body through yoga.

Turning the museum into a complex cultural healing space

This program isn’t just a one-time event. It is part of the National Cheongju Museum’s effort to evolve beyond a static space centered on viewing relics into a complex cultural space that improves citizens’ quality of life. As a new museum utilization model that combines historical cultural heritage with psychological healing for modern people, it is also an attempt to broaden the horizons of culture programs at public museums across the country.

In addition, it is expected to be officially selected and operated as a specialized content for “Culture Day with Culture” from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. In other words, it opens up an opportunity for more citizens to enjoy culture and wellness together.
