Meditation, A New Key to Preventing Youth Addiction

The Korea Gambling Control Commission's Youth Gambling Addiction Prevention Week

Recently, the issues of youth gambling and drug addiction have become serious. With teenagers now owning smartphones, they can easily access online games and may unknowingly fall into drug use. Amid the serious problem of online gambling targeting youth, the Korea Gambling Control Commission has been operating Youth Gambling Prevention Week since last year.

This year, a declaration ceremony was held in Busan to create a network of cooperation with the community, followed by a commemorative event in Seoul with seven major gambling companies after Daejeon. Various booths promoting the dangers of gambling were set up, and many youth, parents, and citizens participated.

As the prevention week unfolds to build a social safety net to protect youth from gambling, the role of Buddhism in helping mental health through meditation and temple stays is being called for as a fundamental solution.

Gambling addiction is like a hell of ants that is hard to escape

A high school student's mother confessed, "My son, who is in debt for millions of won from gambling, said he wants to die," and although the parents paid off the debt, she lamented that "the hell of gambling addiction started from that point." In such situations, it is necessary to consider the causes and prevention methods of youth addiction, as well as the role of meditation.

Reasons why youth fall into gambling and drugs

There are several reasons why youth fall into addiction. Above all, the psychology of seeking an escape from stress is significant. In the high-stress environment of exam competition and peer relationships, gambling offers the illusion of easily making big money, while drugs provide a temporary escape.

Digital accessibility is also a major issue. With just one smartphone, it is easy to access illegal gambling sites or drug transaction channels, lowering the threshold for temptation. A gambling recovery participant confessed, "I repeatedly went through the process of easily making and losing large sums of money and lost everything around me."

Peer pressure cannot be overlooked. Small bets among friends, known as 'all-in', often gradually develop into gambling. Similarly, drug use usually starts with curiosity and peer conformity.

Finally, the lack of healthy alternative activities increases the risk of addiction. Lee Jin-sik, the secretary general of the Korea Gambling Control Commission, pointed out that "youth gambling issues are a matter of the mind" and that a "value system centered on competition and money" becomes the soil for addiction.

Practical alternatives for addiction prevention

To prevent addiction, healthy communication at home is essential. Open dialogue between parents and children can serve as a safety net to seek help before problems become serious.

Digital literacy education is also crucial. Broadcaster Kim Young-hee emphasized, "Gambling is something you shouldn't even start," stating that "you lose everything about yourself through gambling, making it a game you can never win."

Building a social safety net is also important. Activities like the Korea Gambling Control Commission's 'Youth Gambling Prevention Week' and the gambling addiction counseling service (1336) should be activated.

Above all, developing healthy stress relief methods is key. We must support youth in feeling a sense of achievement and joy through healthy means such as sports, arts, and volunteer activities.

The positive impact of meditation on youth

Recently, the effectiveness of meditation in preventing youth addiction has gained attention. Meditation is not just simple relaxation; it is a scientifically proven method for enhancing mental health.

Improvement in self-regulation is the greatest effect of meditation. Regular meditation reduces stress hormones and increases frontal lobe activity, enhancing impulse control. This becomes a direct strength to resist the temptations of gambling or drugs.

Meditation also builds emotional resilience. The ability to healthily overcome stress or difficulties is key to preventing addiction. Experiential meditation programs like temple stays provide youth with opportunities to explore their inner selves away from the digital environment.

Above all, meditation helps in forming true values. By experiencing what inner peace and true happiness are, instead of material success and immediate pleasure, they find the meaning of a sustainable life rather than the temporary excitement provided by gambling or drugs.

Preventing addiction through inner peace

Once you start gambling or using drugs, it is hard to escape. The key to prevention is caring for the mental health of youth, and meditation can be an effective tool for this.

Youths who become aware of their minds through meditation, resist impulses, and experience what true happiness is can better resist the temptations of addiction. When families, schools, and communities work together to support the inner growth of youth, we can raise healthy future generations free from the shadows of addiction.
