
The notion that you need years of training for meditation to leave a lasting trace on the brain is being shaken. A research team at India’s National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) reported in the international academic journal Mindfulness that brain waves change clearly within minutes after starting a meditation in which participants watch their breathing, and that the shift is generally largest around the 7-minute mark. Another study from the United States reported that indicators related to the brain and blood moved together after only 7 days of focused training. The findings suggest that meditation’s effects are not just something that accumulates slowly.
Changes begin within minutes, with a peak around 7 minutes
According to the NIMHANS Center for Consciousness Research team, brain-wave changes during meditation start to appear around 2 to 3 minutes into the session, reach a maximum between 7 and 10 minutes, and are especially prominent around the 7-minute point across multiple participants. According to reports by ScienceDaily and MedicalExpress, after passing that point, researchers observed an increase in activity in the theta-wave and alpha-wave bands and a decrease in delta waves and some gamma waves. The pattern is interpreted as a shift toward a state that keeps attention even as the brain relaxes. Mallypedi Saketh, a researcher who participated in the study, said, “Measurable changes in brain activity can appear within just a few minutes after starting meditation,” adding, “This suggests that even short meditation can have a meaningful impact on the brain’s dynamics.”
Recording the brain waves of 103 people with 128 electrodes
The research team studied 103 participants in total: 28 people with no meditation experience at all, 33 beginners at an introductory stage, and 42 experienced meditators. While participants performed the “breath-watching” meditation from the Isha Yoga tradition, the team recorded signals using 128-channel brain-wave measurement equipment, and focused its analysis on the changes during the first 10 minutes out of a 15-minute session. Unlike earlier studies with smaller samples, the team explained that by dividing the participants into three groups and comparing them, it could examine how meditation experience is reflected in brain responses.
Responses appeared even in beginners, but were clearer in experienced meditators
One notable point is that these changes were not limited to people who had trained for a long time. Brain waves moved within the first few minutes regardless of meditation experience. However, in experienced meditators, theta-wave activity and theta-alpha-band activity remained higher throughout the session. The findings can be read as meaning that while longer training leads to deeper and more stable responses, beginners also can cross the threshold for change in a short period of time. The research team also suggested that providing short meditation—around 7 minutes—in digital form could become an accessible mental-health tool.

Around the same time, the United States also released research showing meditation’s rapid effects. A research team at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) reported in the international academic journal Communications Biology that after 20 healthy adults took part in 7 days of intensive training, brain imaging and blood indicators changed together. Participants went through a residential program that included about 33 hours of meditation, and an analysis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) confirmed a tendency for activity in brain regions associated with internal mind-wandering to decrease. The team said it also observed changes in indicators related to substances in the body and immune responses tied to pain relief. Hemal Patel, a professor on the study, explained, “This isn’t just simple stress relief or relaxation—it’s a biological confirmation that the brain’s relationship with reality itself changes.”
Good news because it’s short, but be careful
The two studies were conducted in different countries and with different methods, but they point in the same direction: meditation doesn’t necessarily require years, and the brain can begin responding within just a few minutes—at least in some cases. Still, because both studies are early-stage efforts with relatively small samples, it’s too soon to interpret the results as extending to treatment effects for a specific disease. More broadly targeted follow-up research is needed to determine under what conditions short meditation helps whom, and for how long. Even so, the science is again confirming that a few minutes of breathing meditation each day is never in vain.
