If you’ve ever gone to a yoga studio, you’ve likely run into a moment like this at least once. It’s when the person on the next mat easily completes the pose, while you stand there holding your body stiffly, unsure how to move. Viniyoga starts exactly from that point. Instead of forcing your body to match fixed movements, you redesign the practice to fit your current body and condition. A chance has been arranged to learn this long-held wisdom firsthand.
The Korea Physical Psychology Education Association said it will hold a Viniyoga special lecture at Bucheon Jigeum Yoga Studio from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, featuring the talk “Customized Yoga for Me—Awakening Body Sensations Through Viniyoga.”
Yoga that starts in your body, not fixed postures
Viniyoga is a practice rooted in the Krishnamacharya tradition of India, often referred to as the father of modern yoga. The core lesson is: “Don’t fit people to yoga—fit yoga to people.” Because movements and breathing are adjusted flexibly according to an individual’s physical condition, age, and recovery ability, organizers say even modern people with stiff bodies or living with pain can approach it without strain.
The special lecture will run on three tracks. First is customized practice, applying yoga to the individual’s circumstances and functions according to the Krishnamacharya tradition. Second is a recovery practice that helps restore collapsed postures through gentle, spine-centered movement and awakens life energy. Third is a sensory awareness practice in which participants experience a meditative state where breath volume increases through proper breathing techniques and the mind becomes calm.
From the basics to breath training: A 4-hour curriculum
The curriculum is divided into four parts: an overview of Viniyoga, Viniyoga asana, understanding pranayama, and basic pranayama training. It is designed so that after learning the philosophy of Viniyoga through theory, participants practice asana with their bodies and then move on to the principles and basic hands-on training of pranayama breathing practice. The organizers said it will not be a time for blindly forcing yourself through exercises, but an opportunity to carefully observe your body’s sensations and awaken the life force within.
The lecture will be led by Professor O Kyung-sook of Wonkwang Digital University. O is a doctor in mind-body integrated healing studies and a Viniyoga expert. She runs a natural healing yoga center in Jeju and serves as vice chair of the Korea Yoga Alliance. She has guided customized healing yoga on the ground for a long time, including serving as chair of the Jeju-area yoga association.
