A Brain Tired of Short-Form Video Learns How to Rest Again… Seoul Cyber University Opens Offline Yoga and Meditation Lecture Series in September

On the subway ride home from work, your fingers don’t rest—they keep flipping through short videos. The screen goes on and on until 10 minutes become 30. Yet your body suddenly feels heavier. This familiar fatigue—where you feel like you rested but don’t feel rested—gets direct attention in a course opening this fall in Mia-dong, Seoul.

Seoul Cyber University (President Lee Eun-joo) announced that its Wellness College Yoga Meditation Department will hold a total of six sessions of the 2026 "Yoga Meditation Offline Course Series" from Sept. 6 to Nov. 29. The venue will be Room 501 in Building A at Seoul Cyber University, and advance registration began Aug. 3. Anyone can participate, including current students in the Yoga Meditation Department, as well as people interested in yoga, meditation, and wellness. Details are available on the Yoga Meditation Department website.

Why an online university rolls out an offline mat

The series targets areas that are difficult to fill with online lectures alone. That’s because the length of your breath, the fine angles of your seated posture, and the sensations when muscles finally release are hard to convey through a screen.

Lee Min-young, head of the Yoga Meditation Department, said, "We prepared this so students can experience and practice real yoga and meditation directly, beyond online classes." She added, "Through programs that reflect the latest trends—mindfulness meditation (MBSR), a fusion of brain science and mindfulness yoga, and yoga that applies applied psychoneurophysiology (AK)—students will be able to experience both theory and practice in a balanced way."

The first session is led by An Hee-young, MBSR No. 1

Session one on Sept. 6 is led by Seated Lecturer An Hee-young: "From Burnout to Vitality: Mindfulness MBSR Meditation." MBSR is an eight-week program created in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the United States for patients living with chronic pain and illness. It combines Eastern mindfulness practices with Western mind-body medicine.

An was the first Korean to receive certification as an MBSR instructor from the Center for Mindfulness (CFM) in the United States, and currently serves as director of the Korea MBSR Mindfulness Research Institute. She previously served as vice president at the Seoul Buddhist Graduate University. She has translated multiple books by Jon Kabat-Zinn into Korean.

Dopamine reset—reading "true rest" again through brain science

In session two on Sept. 20, invited instructor Kim A-yoon of the Seoul Buddhist Graduate University will lead "Dopamine Reset: True Rest and Mindfulness Yoga Unpacked Through Brain Science." The school said the topic covers how to help a brain overloaded by stimulating short-form video content and media exposure rest.

This topic has drawn sharply growing attention in recent years. The Seoul Citizens University newspaper previously reported, citing keyword analysis service Sumtrend, that online mentions of "dopamine detox" have increased more than fivefold from the previous year. Observers point to the so-called "popcorn brain" phenomenon in which the brain responds only to strong stimuli, along with a decline in focus that makes it difficult to return to the task at hand after watching short videos.

Three practice sessions—starting with how to sit, all the way to breathing

In October and November, lectures by Professor Oh Joo-won are scheduled in a concentrated block. On Oct. 11, "Hatha Yoga Practice: Yoga for Comfortable Seated Postures" builds a posture that stays steady even after sitting for a long time, laying a physical foundation for meditation. On Oct. 25, "Yoga Applying Applied Psychoneurophysiology (AK): Stomach and Spleen" follows. AK is an approach that looks at the body’s structural, chemical, and mental balance through muscle testing, based on the premise that long-term functioning and weakening of specific muscles are related. On Nov. 22, "Hatha Yoga Practice: Yoga Deepened Through Breath" covers deep relaxation and awakening your senses.

The final chapter is handled by yoga philosophy

The final session on Nov. 29 is by Seated Lecturer Lee Geo-ryong: "Yoga Philosophy: Understanding Humans in Yoga and the System of Practice." The series ends by looking at how yoga views human beings beyond movement and breath—and by explaining what system practice stands on.

New in 2025: Seoul Cyber University’s only Yoga Meditation Department

The Yoga Meditation Department at Seoul Cyber University was established in 2025. It treats yoga and meditation as academic subjects grounded in scientific evidence, not as hobbies or exercise. The department aims to train experts in healing yoga and healing meditation.

The faculty includes Professor Lee Geo-ryong, who teaches chakra meditation; Professor An Hee-young for MBSR; and a Buddhist monk who practiced in Sri Lanka for 10 years, who teaches early Buddhist meditation. It also includes Professor Jang Ji-sook, who has systematized somayoga in Korea.

Three months of fall and six evening sessions are prepared. Only those who sit down and try it themselves know what kind of rest it becomes to put your phone away and sit on the mat.
