Center One Meditation Centre’s intensive course, Sea of Stillness Cohort 9, begins on 24 October… Five weeks to stillness through relaxation and breathing

An intensive course for people who have wanted to try meditation but did not know where to start is opening its doors again. Center One Meditation Centre in Haebangchon, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, has announced that its intensive meditation course, Sea of Stillness Cohort 9, will begin on 24 October. Sessions will run for three hours, from 9am to noon every Saturday, until 28 November, with five sessions in total.

A five-session intensive course that teaches the path to stillness through relaxation, breathing and observation

Center One is a meditation centre focused on leaders’ stillness and insight, and the development of consciousness. Sea of Stillness is its signature course, aiming to help participants understand meditation practice systematically and embody it. Center One says the course is designed not just to explain relaxation, breathing techniques and the mechanisms of meditation that lead to stillness, but to help participants experience them for themselves.

The course follows the arc of an inner journey in search of the self. Participants progress through stages of entering stillness, remaining in it, and awakening consciousness within it to observe.

From the gateway into stillness to the beginnings of observation, with a week off on 14 November and a final session on the 28th

The course begins with Session 1, The Gateway into Stillness, followed by Session 2, Breathing Techniques for Establishing Sati; Session 3, Remaining in Deep Stillness; Session 4, Expanding Pure Consciousness; and Session 5, The Beginning of Observation. Sati is a Pali word for the mind’s awareness of the present moment, commonly translated as mindfulness.

Sessions will take place on 24 and 31 October, and 7, 21 and 28 November. There will be no class on 14 November. During the week without a class in the previous Cohort 8, participants practised pausing whatever they were doing and noticing their breathing in response to KakaoTalk reminders. They shared their experiences at the following Saturday’s gathering.

Led by founder No Sang-chung, who has practised for nearly 40 years, and the Center One HOME team

The course will be led jointly by Center One founder Asi (No Sang-chung) and the Center One HOME team. Founder No Sang-chung began meditating at the age of 15 and has continued his practice for nearly 40 years. He holds a PhD in psychology from Sungkyunkwan University and studied Buddhist studies at Dongguk University. As chairman of CARROT Global, a global capabilities and leadership training company, he has drawn on his experience of seeking answers through meditation in the business world to co-write The Path to Management Found in Meditation with coach Kim Beom-jin. Center One opened in Haebangchon in August 2024.

For beginners daunted by sitting for long periods, a step-by-step class that starts with the principles may be the right fit

In an age of relentless information, meditation that asks beginners to sit for a long time and empty their minds from the outset can feel like a high barrier to entry. Sea of Stillness starts with relaxation to release physical tension and breathing, then progresses to learning how to remain in stillness and how to observe. It is suited to people who have tried opening a meditation app on their own but quickly lost their way, or who want to learn the principles of meditation step by step.

Those who would prefer to start with movement-based meditation or a short introductory session can begin elsewhere. There are many entry points, including walking, yoga and sound meditation, and choosing a method that suits you is itself a first step in meditation. An intensive course that brings people together in the same place to practise with the same group for five weeks is an open door for those seeking depth. Spaces such as Center One, which present meditation in the language of people working in the city while placing less emphasis on religion, offer another way for Korean meditation to become part of everyday life.
